  • Job Role – Workshop Controller 

    Salary – Up to £37,000 per annum   

    Location – Derby

    Working Hours – Monday - Friday 08:30 - 17:30  

    Job Status – Permanent

    The Workshop Controller is responsible for coordinating the daily activities of the workshop to ensure efficient, safe, and high‑quality vehicle maintenance and repair operations. This role acts as the link between the service reception, technicians, and parts departments, ensuring work is scheduled, resourced, monitored, and completed on time while meeting productivity, quality, and customer service targets.

    Key Responsibilities 

    Workshop Coordination & Scheduling

    • Allocate work to technicians based on skill set, workload, and job priority.
    • Monitor job progress, ensuring tasks are completed on time and within estimated labour hours.
    • Adjust schedules and workloads throughout the day to improve efficiency and manage unexpected issues.
    • Ensure all required parts, tools, and documentation are available before work begins.

     Operational Efficiency

    • Maximize workshop productivity and utilization by proactively managing workflow.
    • Review and manage job cards, ensuring accurate documentation, costings, and compliance.
    • Support technicians with job queries, technical information, and problem-solving.
    • Identify bottlenecks and implement solutions to improve operational flow.

     Quality & Safety

    • Ensure all work meets company and manufacturer standards for quality and safety.
    • Enforce workshop health & safety procedures, PPE use, and compliance with regulations.
    • Conduct quality control checks on completed work before vehicles are released.

     Communication & Collaboration

    • Act as the main point of contact between service advisors, technicians, and parts teams.
    • Provide regular updates on job status, delays, and technical issues.
    • Liaise with customers through the service team when technical explanations are required.

     Reporting & Administration

    • Track daily performance metrics including efficiency, productivity, and workshop loading.
    • Support service management with reporting, planning, and process improvements.
    • Assist in managing technician training needs and development plans.

     Things we look for in you:  

    • Previous experience in a manager or senior leadership role within a workshop
    • Leadership capability — confident supervising teams in fast‑paced operational settings
    • Clear, effective communication — able to motivate teams, give direction and build strong working relationships
    • Full valid UK driving licence is essential, held for a minimum of 2 years essential 
    • Qualified to City and Guilds or NVQ Level 2 or 3 desirable but not essential
